Anyone who’s had an opportunity to personally know me for an extended period of time eventually finds out that I have a great passion for martial arts. One of my favorite activities to do in my spare time is coach youth, in boxing and Muay Thai, who are aspiring to become professional fighters. I have recently had the pleasure of working with an adolescent named Jesse who is preparing to start his amateur boxing career. In my experience, the most difficult aspect of a person’s first time in a sanctioned fight is overcoming the fear and doubts that cloud judgment, causing the inability to execute the desired action plan that was established during training. For this reason, I find it extremely necessary to build a solid foundation of confidence in a young fighter to ensure success.
It is my belief that confidence in the ring (and maybe in life) is instilled by training properly and feeling well prepared, but it definitely reinforces self-esteem when you bombard it with inspirational words. Preparing Jesse for his first amateur fight has left me thinking about some of my favorite quotes to ignite the fire of courage, and I would love to share them with you.
“I am the greatest; I said it before I knew I was. I figured that if I said it enough, I would convince the world that I really was the greatest.“
“To die without even having tried will be to die disappointed.”
“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”
“All battles are first won or lost, in the mind.”
-Joan of Arc
“Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.”
For those who are interested in checking out Jesse’s progress, I added a quick round of me helping him out with some sparring. Enjoy! (Jesse is in the black gloves and blue shorts and I am in the white gloves and shorts.)
